Hong Kong Environmental Protection Festival (HKEPF) 2003

Hong Kong Environmental Protection Festival (HKEPF) 2003 was an annual territory-wide action-oriented campaign jointly organized by Environmental Campaign Committee (ECC) and Environmental Protection Department (EPD).

This year, "Business Opportunities for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Environmental Protection Industry" was selected as the theme of this event. The objectives of conducting these activities were:

  1. to enhance public's awareness on their responsibilities to protect the environment;
  2. to minimize the production of waste and encourage recycling;
  3. to enhance the competitive advantages of Hong Kong SMEs and bring business opportunities
    to them;
  4. to echo Government's initiative in waste reduction;
  5. to arouse SME's awareness on environmental market in Hong Kong and the Mainland,
    in particular Pearl River Delta; and
  6. to arouse SME's awareness on environmentally-friendly products, services and technology.

Co-organizers included Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and Hong Kong Women Professionals & Entrepreneurs Association (HKWPEA). Supporting Organizations include Business Environment Council, The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management Hong Kong, The Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, Chinese Hong Kong EPS Association Ltd., The Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong, Environmental Contractors Management Association, Federation of Hong Kong Industries, Hong Kong Construction Association, Hong Kong Environmental Industry Association, Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (Environmental Division), Hong Kong Productivity Council, Trade and Industry Department. Sponsors included Environment and Conservation Fund, The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited, The Hongkong Electric Co., Ltd. and The Kowloon Motor Bus Co. (1933) Ltd.

HKEPF 2003 was successfully held on 11 November 2003 (Tuesday) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Series of activities included the kick-off, seminar sessions and environmental exhibition. About 8,000 person-times were recorded in the seminars and exhibitions.

(1) Kick-off

The Kick-off for the EPF 2003 was successfully held at 9:30 a.m. on that day. Officiating Guests included Mr. Ronnie Wong, JP, Chairman of ECC, Mr. Robert Law, JP, Director of Environmental Protection, Mrs. Anna Lai, Deputy Executive Director of HKTDC and Mrs. Eva Cheng, President of HKWPEA. The Honourable Mrs. Rita Fan, GBS, JP, President of Legislative Council, Ms. Cheung Mei Chu, Doris, Deputy Secretary for Environment, Transport and Works, Mr. Li Weiyu, Director of Guangzhou Environmental Protection Bureau, Mr. Wang Zhengming, Deputy Director of Shenzhen Environmental Protection Bureau, Mr. Feng Yurong, Director of Zhongshan Environmental Protection Bureau, Mr. Zheng Wenbo, Section Chief of Zhuhai Environmental Protection Bureau, Mr. Hu Qingxin, Vice President, Secretary General and Senior Engineer of Guangdong Environmental Protection Industries Association, Ms. Vong Man-hung, President of Executive Committee of Macau Environment Council, Mr. Anthony Burger, Consul General of Consulate General of Canada, Ms. Angela To, Deputy Commissioner of Queensland Government Trade and Investment Office Hong Kong & South China, Mr. Paul Fan, JP, Chairman of Vetting Sub-Committee, Environment and Conservation Fund, Ir. Otto Poon, Chairman of Waste Reduction Committee and Mr. Joseph Lee, BBS, JP, Convenor of ECC's Projects, Publicity and Resources Working Groups also joined as Officiating Guests of the Opening Ceremony. A total of about 300 guests joined the Ceremony.

(2) Seminar Sessions

17 seminar sessions each of 25 to 30 minutes were held after the Kick-off from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and were divided into four themes, namely: (1) Waste Recycling Industry; (2) Recycling of Plastic Waste; (3) Construction Materials; and (4) Rubber Tires Waste and Food Waste. Speakers included representatives from EPD, Trade and Industry Department, key players in supporting organizations, consulates, universities, recycling industry and associations. They were invited to share their environmental knowledge and experiences in the recycling industry and environmentally-friendly products, services and technology.

(3) Trade Show

A Trade Show was also held alongside the Forum to facilitate the objectives and to foster sharing experience and contacts among exhibitors and participants. 23 organizations including EPD, HKTDC, supporting organizations, universities, associations and other waste recycling companies set up exhibition booths and displayed their environmentally friendly products, services or technology related to environmental protection and waste recycling industries.
