The Hong Kong Green School Award is organised by the Environmental Campaign Committee, Environmental Protection Department and Education Bureau since 2000. The Hong Kong Institute of Education, Hong Kong Productivity Council and Vocational Training Council are the co-organisers. The winning schools are awarded cash prizes for promoting environmental management and education in their schools.
The objectives of this Scheme are to encourage schools to formulate a school environmental policy and environmental management plan towards a green school; enhance environmental awareness, develop environmentally friendly attitude and promote green practices among school managers, teachers, non-teaching staff, students and their parents.
From 2006 onwards, Hong Kong Green Pre-school Award has been incorporated into Hong Kong Green School Award which now comprises the Pre-school, Primary School and Secondary School Categories. The award scheme comprises environmental training workshops, competition and adjuducation.
Judging Criteria
Pre-school Category
Participating schools will be required to complete the Self-assessment Form (Chinese version only) to the Environmental Campaign Committee Secretariat for initial assessment. The adjudicating panel will then visit the shortlisted pre-schools to select three best performing schools to receive "Outstanding Awards" in respect of each criterion.
Winners of the "Outstanding Awards" will be awarded a plaque acknowledging "Hong Kong Green Pre-school Outstanding Award for Environmental Infrastructure / Environmental Management / Environmental Education / Parents' Participation in Environmental Activities" respectively while those pre-schools that reach the benchmark score will be awarded "certificates of Appreciation".
Primary School and Secondary School Categories
-
Environmental Policy and Campus Environment
-
Environmental Management Measures
-
Environmental Education Plan and Implementation
-
Environmental Education Effectiveness
Participating schools will be required to complete the Self-assessment Manual and give themselves scores based on the criteria in the manual. Schools meeting the benchmark scores of all of the four assessment criteria will be awarded the "Hong Kong Green School" status. No more than 10 top scoring schools from each of the Primary School and School Categories will be referred to the 2010 HKAEE to compete for the Sectoral Awards in the Schools Sector.
Logo of Hong Kong Green School Award
The logo of the Hong Kong Green School Award was designed by the renowned architect, Dr. Ho Tao. The heart-shaped leaf of the Bauhinia Blakeana symbolizes students' love for the environment. The veins on the leaf imply the importance of good networking in the learning process. Its alias "wisdom leaf" signifies the wisdom of Hong Kong students.
