Reduce Your Waste and Recycle Your Plastics Campaign

School Waste Reduction and Recycling Education and Awareness Campaign - "Reduce Your Waste and Recycle Your Plastics Campaign 2012"

The Environmental Protection Department (EPD), the Environmental Campaign Committee (ECC), the Education Bureau (EDB) and the Yan Oi Tong EcoPark Plastic Resources Recycling Centre (YOT PRRC) jointly organise the "Reduce Your Waste and Recycle Your Plastics Campaign" (the Campaign hereafter). The first phase of the Campaign has been launched in school year 2011/12 and over 100 schools have enrolled in the Campaign. The second phase of the Campaign will be held in the coming school year 2012/13 and we cordially invite schools to participate in the Campaign.

The Campaign aims at enhancing students' awareness on waste reduction and recycling and cultivating their behavioural change, as well as reinforcing the message of waste reduction and proper recycling of unavoidable waste. Students are also encouraged to share the idea of waste reduction and recovery with their families and to participate in the Campaign with them. Under this Campaign, participating students are encouraged to bring unavoidable waste plastic bottles to school for recycling. Students are advised to clean the bottles thoroughly and to remove their lids and labels before discarding them.

To encourage schools to take an active part in waste reduction and source separation of waste plastics, the Campaign consists of a competition and various awards will be presented to participating schools to recognize their achievements and efforts in waste reduction and recycling. Participating schools will not only be provided with education kit(s) and additional recycling bin(s) for collection of waste plastic bottles, but also have the priority in joining the education activities for the Campaign, such as site visits to the YOT PRRC; workshops and drama performance (in Cantonese only) organised by the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre on the theme of waste recycling.
